Sky Scraper Or No Sky Scraper
By Will P. Circelli
That is the question. The new towers in the works for Yonge and
Eglinton are creating quite a controversy between Minto Advisers
Inc. (The company in charge of the building creation) and the
public. The two towers of 54 and 47 storeys, will create 1,030 new
dwellings in the immediate Yonge/Eglinton area. Will this project
generate too much traffic for the area? The effects of these
buildings could open doors and bring the possibility for the
creation of even larger projects to the once quiet residential area
of Yonge and Eglinton. Or could this be more beneficial for the area
and even Toronto as a whole? Toronto has few buildings in which can
be viewed as tourist attractions, this would be one of them. The
building design is innovative and beautiful. Designed to blend in
with the sky line the glass and limestone buildings are to be set
behind five storeys of residential and commercial space fronting the
1.92-acre site. The bottom two storeys will
be utilized for commercial space catering to the
residents of the towers, such as cafes, while the top three storeys
will be elegant townhousing for seniors. "This project is the
geographic center of the city," says Bob Blazevski (Minto's
director of development and planning) "and will have a major
impact on what is considered to be a vital area of the city."
